Plumbing Tip #28: Precautions to take when using a chemical drain cleaner
Whenever you use chemicals, be sure to do so with caution. Never use a plunger if you are using a chemical drain cleaner as you could risk splashing yourself with acid. You should also always wear protective rubber gloves to ensure that you do not cause damage to your skin. If the fixture is full of water and is completely covered, do not use a chemical cleaner. This could only worsen the problem. Most importantly, before you begin, read the warning labels.

You are advised not to mix chemicals with other compounds as this may cause unpredictable results such as an explosion. Also, do not look down a drain after using the chemical drain cleaner as these solutions often emit unpleasant toxic fumes that can cause nausea and make you feel giddy.
