Plumbing Tip #43: How to maintain your septic tank
In most cases, septic tanks may need to be pumped every three years. This all depends on the size of the tank, the daily flow of waste water into the tank and the use of a garbage disposal. You could choose to either pump your tank following a regular schedule of based on the accumulated sludge and layers of scum. You have to pump out your tank when the sludge layers exceed 24 inches or when the bottom of the scum layer is less than three inches above the end of the submerged outlet. The drain-field in the septic tank requires little maintenance and should be checked from time to time to make sure there is no surfacing sewage. Vegetation should be kept to a minimum while roof drains should be directed away from the drain-field.
