Plumbing Tip: Keep Those Pipes from Freezing

Living in a cold weather climate like Michigan, it is important to protect pipes that are exposed to the outside. Even as late as May, and as early as September, freezing temperatures can wreck havoc on your water pipes. Here are a few steps to take to prevent costly repairs:

1. Disconnect hoses from water bibs outside your house all the time. By getting into the habit of always disconnecting your hoses, you won't have to worry about whether you did it the night it froze outside. This also reduces the chance of other types of leaks that happen around hose bibs.

2. Turn your sprinkler system off, even if you plan to use it again tomorrow. Although this is not something you need to do all summer long ,at least get in the habit of turning it off before June 1 and after September 15 to make sure a quick overnight freeze doesn't flood your basement. Even if an outside connection freezes and break, by having turned the water off, you will have saved the inside of the house.
