Plumbing Tip #15: Sound advice on chemical drain cleaners
We must understand that chemical drain cleaners are potentially dangerous and should only be used as a last resort. These cleaners are often reactive to human tissue and must be properly and safely used. Instead of having to resort to these chemical cleaners, preventive measures such as not pouring grease down the drain, using strainers and regularly cleaning the drains with hot water would be advisable. However, if you are left with no choice, chemical drain cleaners may be your only option. They contain a high concentration of lye or sulfuric acid that burns through all sorts of tough clogs quickly. However, remember when using a chemical cleaner, make sure to read and follow all directions and warnings on the bottle and run plenty of water to ensure the chemicals are flushed out properly
