To maintain your garbage disposal, use a strong flow of cold water and keep it running for a minute after the noise of grinding has stopped. This will help flush all food particles and solidify fatty and grease wastes. This will also prevent waste from being chopped up and flushed down the drain. Make sure that you do not put in bones into the garbage disposal as it may damage the grinding chamber. Also do not put fibrous materials or uncooked fat as this could clog up the disposal. If you hear an unusual noise while operating, this could mean there are some foreign objects and you should turn off the disposal immediately. If the disposal stalls, turn it off and retrieve the substance that is causing the problem. You can then reset the disposal.
