Plumbing Tip #32: What should you do if your Water Closet is blocked?

If you flush your WC and notice that the water level is the same or it rises and is slow to clear, there is a chance of a partial blockage near the trap. Try filling a bucket with water and pour it into the toilet bowl as quickly as possible. Doing this several times would normally clear the blockage. If this does not do the job, wait for the water to recede and use a plunger. Make sure the plunger covers the opening of the toilet fully and give it 20 to 30 short, forceful strokes. If all fails, you may resort to using a chemical drain cleaner. A WC auger is also an alternative. Push the clearing rod into the trap as far as possible and when the obstruction is found, try dislodging it. When you are done, flush the toilet and use a disinfectant.
