Plumbing Tip #11: What should you do if you have a leaking toilet?
Something that may start as just a minor leak may develop into something more serious if not attended to immediately. A minor leak may soon develop into structural damage and if your toilet is upstairs, this could do more than just damage your toilet floor. Fortunately testing for a toilet leak is easy and all you need to do is dye the water in the toilet tank. After that, just wait about 20 to 30 minutes before checking the water in the toilet bowl. If it is clear, then you do not have a leak. If it is not, then you have a problem. There may be several possible causes, and the most common is probably because the valve that controls the release of water from the tank to the bowl needs to be replaced. These valves last about two to six years.
