Plumbing Tip #16: Troubleshooting gas water heaters
There could be many reasons why your gas water heater is acting up. A step by step check will help you discover the problem. For one, if there isn’t enough hot water, your thermostat could be set too low and you may need to increase the temperature, while there could also be sediments in the tank causing disruptions to the water flow. Another possibility is that you have low gas pressure and may consider checking with the utility company. If there is no hot water at all, you should check the pilot light and make sure the gas controls are switched on. Then, have a look at the thermocouple and ensure that it is linked to the gas control unit. If there is water leaking from the heater, check for leaks in the drain-cock, safety valve and examine the tank for any leaks.
